Of design, Mac and Flickr

I’ve been quite busy, and still am. But this is not the post saying what not about it. I am happy being busy. Mostly because of the following…

Many of you might know Hanni. I most certainly do, and when she started on her own weblog system, she kind of discarded her design. Too bad. So I offered my skills. This is just a temporary design, but it should look better than nothing. Expect more news in the future.

Also, ‘nother Brit with whom I speak quite often, who had a question for me. Well, hah. Read more about it on Pete’s site, because he Rebooted and it rocks.

Mac update for those interested: Saturday was Queen’s Day, a national holiday in the Netherlands, so little happened over here. Today was, of course, a Sunday, another day for people to do nothing. My Mac seems due Tuesday or Wednesday. When it arrives, I will be able to use something I designed myself. Let me introduce to you:

Flidget

Anatoly and I have been working on something quite fun. It’s called Flidget and it’s a Widget for Tiger’s new Dashboard, more specifically one to upload a photo to Flickr in a snap. Anatoly did the coding, I did the grapics, and I think it’s safe to say we’re both very proud of what we created.

Wanna see what it looks like? That’s cool, we got screenshots. Want to see it in action? That’s possible. Watch it on my OurMedia account (not there yet? Get it here. It will be taken down as soon as OurMedia puts it up). Wanna use it? Get it here. Anatoly should explain it soon. Anatoly has some words.

Also, on a more badass note, Flidget will feature on the CD that accompanies the July issue of MacWorld. That’s fucking rocking my world. Buy it if you get the chance.

  1. Oh, yes, it rocks! Muhehe... :)

    And more to come...

  2. works. looks pretty. prettier than uploadr! if you guys can work in multiple file and privacy support, i’d be thrilled to completely replace uploadr with it.

  3. Adam: Well, right now public - private works, we’ll have family and friends and stuff in next version, plus I’m gonna try multiple file support... (Dashboard doesn’t let you but I’m sure I’ll come up with something :D)

  4. scratch that. rob pointed out the public option. now just for multiple file support! either way... better than uploadr.

  5. Holy crap! A useful widget! Thanks. :)

  6. Wow! Very useful, and I’m incredibly impressed! I can’t wait until I can drag multiple images onto it.

  7. Woo, thanks guys. We’ve had almost 150 downloads on Dashboardwidgets.com, which totally rocks. Keep on sending us ideas, we might even try more functionality than Uploadr...

  8. I’ll test it with my brand-new PowerBook, which should arive soon. ;-)

  9. There seems to be a bug where it has a broken image if you drag it from Safari.

  10. Jeff: It’s more of a dragging problem in Mac OS X... if you drag something that is linked it won’t work. I tested dragging everything else from Safari and it works.

  11. Sorry, maybe I’m slow, but I’m new to Tiger, clearly, and I don’t know how to drag a file that’s not in dashboard onto the widget. Help? Apparently others are getting it to work...

  12. Rebecca, drag the file and keep it dragged while initiating Dashboard (either use a hot corner or press F12). Then drop it on the Flidget photo frame.

  13. Wow, thank you. Excellent program, I love it!

  14. When I get my greasy paws on Tiger Ill be having this.

  15. Nice and simple little widget, /me digs. Now if only I had a Mac...

  16. Cool! Nice work you two!

  17. Congratulations! That’s extraordinary work!
I guess it pays off to take the time to do these kinds of projects. Your success inspires me to try harder.

  18. Congratulations! You’re doing cool stuff. Keep up the good work.

Now I need to get myself a MacMini too...

  19. this is excellent!

  20. Great stuff!

  21. Hey Rob and Anatoly, congrats on the MacWorld shizzle! This is feckin’ insane.

  22. Hey guys.. would it be possible to also add an option for size? I usually like to upload a much smaller version than what my multi-mega-pixel camera produces.. u know, save space, bandwidth, etc..

  23. Laugh of the day: Red Panda Studios. Haaaaaahaha!

  24. Looks really useful, and demands a test on my test mupter :)

  25. ah man congratz Rob! wootus majorus!

  26. the idea is very good, but the application/widget needs more work. read the comments here http://www.dashboardwidgets.com/showcase/details.php?wid=204

  27. Rob,

Maybe you should add the below directions to the description in the apple site (http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/blogs_forums/flidget.html)
cause I didn’t get how to do it until I read this post and I’m sure there are others out there like me. -tks for the helpful widget! - Cindy

drag the file and keep it dragged while initiating Dashboard (either use a hot corner or press F12). Then drop it on the Flidget photo frame.

  28. How odd that exactly one year to the date this shows up in my referrer logs!

Participate, yes!
