Why I want a Mac?

My XP installation is fucking up. Copying stuff sometimes crashes, Firefox just stopped working correctly, and worst of all, I had to reboot for the first time in weeks. This is no working. Anyone willing to donate a penny? Of course, I’ll take work too.

  1. You have to be one with the machine. The machine abides when handled with care.

  2. I could say something cool and open-sourcey like “Get Linux d00d!”, but I doubt that’d be much help. So I’m just going to say that I feel sorry for you.

I want a Mac too... no fair :(

  3. Open Source is no option, cause running all my RAM-heavy software requires a number-one instance operating system, not some emulator. Well, I’m working on the Mac :P

  4. What RAM-heavy software are you referring to?

I use Fedora as my main OS (although I dual boot Fedora and XP for the family and games ;), and I’ve never used WINE or any other emulator.

I’m going to say something that everbody always says: there are alternatives. I know, and agree, some alternatives aren’t as viable as the “real thing”, but once you start looking there really are some great Linux apps out there.

I’m willing to bet you use Photoshop, and whilst this isn’t available on Linux (yet, maybe one day), there is the GIMP. Personally I can’t comment on what it’s like compared to PS as I don’t use either enough to be able to make that judgement. But it does have a lot of the great features that Photoshop has. I’m not saying that I think you should be using it, I fully support people using whichever programs they think are most suitable (even is that is IE, shudder), but what I would say, is that if I was any good at Photoshopping and anything graphical like that, I’d certainly be taking a close look at the GIMP. But maybe you’ve already done that...

As to Illustrator... I’ve never used it. Ever. However, for my latest redesign I’ve been using an Open Source program called Inkscape. It’s still in reasonably early days, and the Windows port isn’t that great, but it seems to have great potential. Its native format is SVG.

Just some food for (open sourcey) thought...

  5. You’re right on that, but the GIMP didn’t do it for me. I have used Knoppix and Mandrake for a while, but I missed some things. And the problem’s gotten bigger now I need to test my sites in every available browser. I will consider this when I have my Mac. The PC will then be running Linux and XP to test in, so I can use it as a server and test bench.

Mac roxxorsz!!!1 No needle fits between me and my love for Apples.

  6. I dunno dude, my XP install has been running sweet for ages, care is required.

MAC is not the answer anyhow, you still have do some heavy maintenance to keep it sweet.

  7. Can I just ask a seemingly stupid question?

How do you know that you love Macs so much without owning one?

My perfect combo would be using Linux and Mac actively, and just owning a copy of XP to test sites in. One day...

No more mister Nice Guy for me. I’ve done that too, but I’ve had it with this shitty stuff.

Apple is the only manufacturer that motivates me to do heavy maintenance. For XP it just never worked well enough.

If not only the great feeling about it, I just know that I need an operating system that is built for graphical work. And that’s the only thing I do these days. I started thinking of a Mac when I noticed my PC was just not it. Ever since, I’ve been reading more and more about them, and seeing them in action has just totally flipped me over. I. Want. One.

  10. OK. Turnip decides that’s a good enough reason.

I remember back in Primary school (The first 6 years of schooling here in the UK) I thought they were totally stupid because they used Macs mainly. But then again, back in those days I aspired to be a programmer for Microsoft... I can’t think of anything I’d hate more now. It’s funny how things like that change.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I’ve concluded there’s really nothing else to say, so good luck getting a Mac ;).

  11. That’s wierd that you mention this. All of the sudden, yesterday, my Firefox install crapped out on me. I don’t get it. I don’t have any spyware or virii on my machine and yet, it is just starting to ... suck!

I’m definately with you on the Mac suggestion. Good luck with yours, I know I’ll be getting one when (not if) this computer crashes on me again.

  12. I use winxppro around 16 hours a day. I have run this install for almost 2 years now. I run top-heavy apps like 3d studio max and have never éver had a problem i couldn’t fix in less then 15 minutes.

Agreed, Microsoft has made, and is making some very bad stuff.

I’m just saying, all problems with XP I have seen these last 2 years with my install or problems of other people, every single time it was user error.

  13. I’d help you, except that I spent all my money on... a MAC. :)

  14. I’ve had my XP installed for more than 2 years now. And it runs perfectly. Like John said ‘care is required’. ;)

  15. You saw the light! Alleluyah!

  16. I’d help you, except that I spent all my money on… a MAC. :)

You are evil. I’m happy for you. But you are o so evil.

    You saw the light! Alleluyah!

Is there anything else besides the light? Oh yeah, the Dark. I’m stepping into the light. Waiting for the bag of money (maybe mafia money? :P).

  17. while you wait for the mac, reformat and reinstall...
I’ve been wanting a mac ever since my old one passed away after 6 years of non stop use....

  18. Just thought I could be happy. Everything seamt to be working again. But no, Firefox .10 doesn’t seem to get me when I open external links or local html files.

    reformat and reinstall

You have no idea how much information will get lost. Of course I should backup, but all the hassle...
